GMC - B.P.T. Program Recognized as official provider for McKenzie, New Zealand training program in U.A.E

BPT Program - Gulf Medical College invites you to join the select team of participants who will have the privilege of becoming Certified McKenzie Practitioners in a span of one year.

We are pleased to announce the commencement of this program spanning over 5 parts, starting May 2008 at Gulf
Medical College in Ajman - UAE and the course is conducted by International Faculty from McKenzie Institute, New Zealand.

As an MDT (Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy) Provider certified by McKenzie Institute, New Zealand, the participants who successfully complete the course can improve their Professional Standards and develop new methods of assessment and treatment and eliminate need for expensive and/or invasive procedures.

Apart from this, the participants will stand to gain by getting
  • International certification
  • CME Hours accredited by Ministry of Health - UAE

Other Advantages
  • Convenient timings - afternoon sessions on all days of the course
  • Visa and Accommodation assistance from GMC to applicants from other countries

The McKenzie Method: 3 Steps To Success
Step 1: Assessment
Unique to the McKenzie Method ® is a comprehensive and logical step-by-step process to evaluate the patient's problem quickly. This mechanical examination can "classify" most patient conditions by the level of pain or limitation that results from certain movements or positions. A McKenzie assessment can eliminate the need for expensive and/or invasive procedures.

Research has shown the initial McKenzie assessment procedures to be as reliable as costly diagnostic imaging (i.e., x-rays, MRIs) to determine the source of the problem and quickly identify responders and non-responders.

Step 2: Treatment
McKenzie treatment prescribes a series of individualised exercises. The emphasis is on active patient involvement, which minimises the number of visits to the clinic. Ultimately, most patients can successfully treat themselves when provided the necessary knowledge and tools. For patients with more difficult mechanical problems, a certified McKenzie clinician can provide advanced hands-on techniques until the patient can self-treat.

Step 3: Prevention
By learning how to self-treat the current problem, patients gain hands-on knowledge on how to minimise the risk of recurrence and to rapidly deal with recurrence if it occurs. The likelihood of problems persisting can more likely be prevented through self-maintenance. Need a McKenzie lumbar or cervical roll? McKenzie Course: Brief description of Parts

Part A: The Lumbar Spine (28 hours / CME- 15.5 Points)

This 4-day course aims at providing the rationale and appropriate application of the McKenzie method for examination and treatment of patients with low back and referred pain in the form of lectures and demonstrations.

Completion of this course will provide introductory knowledge, basic skills and abilities to:

  • Apply McKenzie method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy to patients with lumbar spine problems.
  • Distinguish between the McKenzie syndromes (postural, derangement, dysfunction), and other conditions as applied to lumbar spine and provide appropriate
treatment regimes for each of the syndromes.
  • Identify when the application of external forces is required for resolution of symptoms using McKenzie’s progression of force concept.
  • Assist patients to design and apply the therapeutic processes on their own to maintain the progress.

Part B: The Cervical and Thoracic Spine (28 hours / CME- 20 Points)

Prerequisite: Completion of Part A.

This 4-day course will provide introductory knowledge, basic skills and abilities to:

  • Apply McKenzie method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy to patients with neck, upper back and related referred pain.
  • The course also includes treatment of cervical headache and trauma.
  • Concepts of McKenzie syndromes are reviewed.

Part C: Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy Problem solving
(21 hours/CME - Points*)

Prerequisite: Completion of Parts A and B.

This 3-day practical workshop emphasizes on active student participation aiming at identifying common problem areas of implementation of the McKenzie method, categorization and treatment of difficult patients.

Completion of this course will provide with knowledge, basic skills and abilities in:

  • Application of McKenzie method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy to difficult patients.
  • Analyzing, categorization and correcting problems in patients with progression of spinal problems.
  • Practice of basic and intermediate techniques.
  • Identification of indication and contraindications.

Part D:Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy Advanced Problem solving
(28 hours/CME - Points*)

Prerequisite: Completion of Parts A, B and C.

This 4-day practical workshop emphasizes on active student participation in advanced problem solving aiming to develop knowledge and skills in determining the appropriate McKenzie diagnosis, classification of difficult patients and multiple mechanical disorders.

Completion of this course will provide with knowledge, basic skills and abilities in:

  • Establishing correct Diagnoses and Identifying Multiple Diagnoses
  • Recognizing Appropriate vs. Inappropriate changes
  • Reactivation/Functional Restoration
  • Assessment and management of patient compliance skills with self-treatment instruction.

Part E:The Human Extremities (14 hours/CME - Points*)

Prerequisite: Completion of Parts A, B, C and D.

This 2-day course focuses on application of McKenzie theory and techniques in the mechanical diagnosis of problems in the extremities and the therapeutic approach to resolve them in the form of lecture presentations.

Completion of this course will provide with knowledge, skills and abilities in:

  • Appropriately applying McKenzie principles for problems of extremities.

Credentialing Examination
(8 hours/CME - Points)
Prerequisite: Completion of Part A, B, C & D

A pass in the examination is recognition of attainment of a minimum level of competency in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy.

Examination is conducted by the McKenzie institute, New Zealand and is based on the education curriculum of the
McKenzie institute Part A-D courses.
